Going Green: Creating Eco-Friendlier Funeral Homes, One Step at a Time
By Jonlyn N. Scrogham

With more and more Americans signing on to the environmental movement—one can find a Whole Foods almost as often as one could find a Super Wal-Mart in a big city, it seems—it is only natural to look toward how you, as a funeral director, can make sure you are serving those families who want to continue their efforts for a greener world, even after life.

What Can I Offer My Families Who Are Environmentally Conscious?
The answer to this question is most definitely one that could exceed the pages of this article. When it comes to green services, this could mean offering formaldehyde-free embalming, completely natural burials, eco-friendly caskets, biodegradable urns, memorial reefs, et cetera. There are so many different products and services that a funeral director can offer to his or her families and the best way to go about doing so is to inform yourself on what is available and then make sure that knowledge is passed on to your families.

Where Can I Seek Assistance and Guidance on My Green Journey?
There are several resources out there to help a funeral director take the necessary steps in transforming his or her funeral home into a greener, more environmentally-friendly facility. Most vendors offer green alternatives to traditional products and their sales teams should be equipped to assist you in your quest to incorporate some of these alternatives into your home. The Green Burial Council (www.greenburialcouncil.org) offers multitudes of resources for the director wanting to go green, including information on their website as well as a directory listing green providers and operators with whom a network can be built. Joe Sehee, Executive Director, President and Founder of the Green Burial Council said, “What the council has done is try to provide a way to define and protect the legitimate environmental benefits that could emanate from this idea and there are four: protection of worker health, reduction of carbon emissions, conservation of natural resources and protection and restoration of habitat.” Passages International, a company offering eco-friendly caskets and biodegradable urns and more, also launched a website (www.agreenerfuneral.org) that educates consumers on greener funerals and connects them with funeral homes offering greener funerals. This website is available to the general public, allowing directors to lead their families to an extensive resource that may be utilized when trying to make greener choices.

Sehee said, “This is a critical time and an opportunity to bring people back to funeral service. We have to do it the right way. If we can’t demonstrate that we can, it’s over, I believe. These consumers will not come back. You will see direct cremations continue to rise.” At the end of the day, you simply can’t go wrong with increasing revenue, creating a safer environment or helping your families all at the same time.

Being Green and preserving our planet has become a way of life for many people. The environmentally-conscious green lifestyle may be one of the most beneficial movements in the world today, and it is easily carried through a final farewell. Meeting desires of families is an ongoing, ever-changing challenge of funeral professionals. It is time to serve the many people who want to preserve the environment through the growing practice of green funerals and burials. For this reason, Passages International developed and sponsors a program called a Greener Funeral (AGF).

A Greener Funeral, and its companion web site, aGreenerFuneral.org, were created to help consumers learn more about the subject of Green and plan a greener funeral. Simultaneously, the program helps funeral professionals better serve their community.

“At aGreenerFuneral.org we believe that Green is in the eye of the beholder,” says Passages’ President, Darren Crouch. “Our goal is to make aGreenerFuneral.org the top resource for consumers interested in greener funerals. While ‘green’ is a growing trend with families all over, the funeral home that is proactive in offering greener funerals and products will attract a broader range of consumers while reinforcing its commitment to personalized service and innovation.”
Passages invites funeral professionals to join its AGF Partner Provider program by providing green products and services to families. “Becoming an AGF Provider simply signifies that you are willing and ready to help families with green funeral alternatives by carrying Passages International products, which are the finest and most earth-friendly available,” says Crouch. “It’s not just about knowing where to go for information, it’s about making these options readily available to families.”

Participants will receive the AGF Greenleaf emblem to display on site, in advertising and at relevant community events. This emblem complements other green funeral certifications and organizational programs. There are no fees or renewable requirements associated with becoming a Partner Provider.

Passages International, Inc. is the largest supplier of green and eco-friendly funeral products.
